Electrician Resume
Brutally Roasted
You pull wire, bend conduit, land panels and pass inspection. Your resume says 'performed electrical work.' The inspector would fail that sentence on sight.

Common Mistakes on Electrician Resumes
The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.
- 01
License level and state missing. Apprentice, journeyman and master are different jobs with different pay, and the license is tied to a state or city.
- 02
No split between residential, commercial and industrial. Service calls in houses, tenant fit-outs and 480V motor controls are different resumes.
- 03
Hours and the code year left out. Apprentices need logged hours stated. Everyone needs to say which NEC edition they work to, since states adopt different years.
- 04
'Installed electrical systems' with no voltage, amperage, panel size or scope. A 200A residential service and a 2,000A switchgear install should not read the same.
- 05
Safety left to a vague 'followed safety procedures.' OSHA 10 or 30, NFPA 70E arc flash training, lockout/tagout and a recordable-free record are specifics.
What Trades Reviewers Check First
Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.
License level, state and whether it is current, since a contractor can only put you on a permit if the paperwork lines up.
The kind of work: residential service, commercial construction, industrial maintenance. Foremen are hiring for the jobs they have booked, not for breadth.
Whether you can read prints and pass inspection without supervision. First-time inspection pass rate and the size of what you have wired say that quickly.
One Electrician Bullet, Rewritten
The advice above, applied to one typical line.
Before
Installed and repaired electrical systems in residential and commercial buildings according to code.
After
Journeyman electrician (Ohio, 2020) on commercial fit-outs from 5,000 to 40,000 square feet, NEC 2023. Ran a crew of four on a 1,200A service and distribution install that passed inspection first time, and logged 2,100 hours in 2024 with no recordables.
The first line could belong to an apprentice in year one or a master with twenty years in. The rewrite names the license, the scale of the work, the code year and a safety record, which is the whole screening checklist for a foreman.

Sample Roast Lines for Electricians
The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about whatβs actually on your resume.
β'Experienced electrician' is in your summary and the word 'journeyman' is nowhere. Which state, and when did you pass?β
βYou list 'troubleshooting' as a skill. Troubleshooting what, a tripped breaker or a VFD that keeps faulting on a 480V line?β
β'Worked on commercial and residential projects.' So has everyone who owns a voltage tester.β
How to Fix Your Electrician Resume
Specific moves that actually move the grade.
- β
Put the license first: 'Journeyman Electrician, Texas, 2021' plus apprentice hours if you are still logging them.
- β
Give each job a scope line: service calls per week, panel upgrades, square footage of a fit-out, number of circuits or devices, voltage and amperage.
- β
Name the code and the specialties: NEC 2023, low-voltage, fire alarm, solar and storage, EV chargers, motor controls, PLC wiring, medium voltage if you have it.
- β
Spell out safety credentials: OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, first aid/CPR, lift certification, and any run of recordable-free hours on a crew you led.
- β
If you ran work, say so with numbers: crew size, jobs closed on schedule, inspections passed first time, change orders written up.

Roast My Electrician Resume For FreeElectrician Resume Questions
Should I list my apprenticeship on my electrician resume?
Yes, as a job. Name the program (IBEW/NECA JATC, IEC, ABC or a contractor-sponsored one), the hours logged, the year you finished and what you were allowed to do on your own by the end. It is the most verifiable part of most electricians' histories.
How do I show industrial experience versus construction?
Use the vocabulary of the setting. Industrial maintenance is motor controls, VFDs, PLC I/O, conduit in hazardous locations, downtime reduced. Construction is prints, rough-in, panels, inspections and schedule. If you have both, keep them in separate bullets so a reader looking for one does not have to dig.
Does a driving record matter on an electrician resume?
For service electricians, often yes, since you may be driving a company van to calls. One line with 'valid driver's license, clean record' covers it. Leave it off for shop or plant roles where it does not apply.
