Delivery Driver Resume
Brutally Roasted

You load 250 packages in stop order before the van leaves the station, make 170 stops by evening, find the side gate at the apartment complex nobody can find and bring the van back without a new scratch. Your resume says 'delivered packages to customers.' So does the box.

Common Mistakes on Delivery Driver Resumes

The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.

  • 01

No route or volume. A parcel van route with 170 stops, a pharmacy route with 25 signature stops and an evening of app orders are different jobs, and stops and packages a day are the first numbers a dispatcher looks for.

  • 02

Safety record left vague. Preventable accidents, years and miles driven, a clean MVR and the in-cab camera or driving app score your company tracked say far more than 'safe driver.'

  • 03

Vehicle and license unclear. Cargo van, step van, box truck or your own car, plus a DOT medical card if you hold one. Most van routes do not need a CDL, so say what you actually drove instead of leaving the fleet manager to guess.

  • 04

Delivery quality missing: completion rate, delivered-not-received claims, damaged packages, photo-on-delivery compliance and customer complaints are numbers many routes track per driver.

  • 05

Lead work buried. Training new drivers on ride-alongs, taking rescues from other routes, covering dispatch and checking vans at return are what move a driver to lead or trainer, and they often never reach the page.

What Trades Reviewers Check First

Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.

  • License and record. A valid license, a clean MVR and your preventable accident history get checked, so a fleet manager looks for them stated plainly near the top.

  • Route volume and pace. Stops and packages a day, the kind of area you cover and whether you load your own van tell a station manager if you can finish a route without a rescue.

  • Reliability. Early load-outs, weekends and peak season are part of the job, so tenure and a peak season worked all the way through count for a lot.

One Delivery Driver Bullet, Rewritten

The advice above, applied to one typical line.

Before

Delivered packages to customers in a timely and safe manner.

After

Last-mile parcel driver in a step van, about 170 stops and 250 packages a day on a mixed suburban and apartment route. Held a 99.5% delivery completion rate in 2025 with 3 delivered-not-received claims all year, zero preventable accidents in 5 years, and trained 14 new drivers on ride-alongs.

The first line is the job title written out. The rewrite gives the vehicle, the route and its volume, a completion rate, a claims count, the safety record and lead work, which is what a delivery station manager is checking.

Sample Roast Lines for Delivery Drivers

The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about what’s actually on your resume.

β€œ'Delivered packages in a timely manner.' Every route has a clock. How many stops, and how many packages came back on the van?”

β€œYou list 'time management' as a skill. Your handheld scanner timed every stop you made, so put the numbers on the page.”

β€œ'Excellent driving record' and not one number. Zero preventable accidents in how many years and how many miles?”

How to Fix Your Delivery Driver Resume

Specific moves that actually move the grade.

  • βœ“

Open each job with the route: 'last-mile parcel route in a step van, about 170 stops and 250 packages a day, mostly apartments and new subdivisions.'

  • βœ“

Give the quality numbers your company tracked: delivery completion rate, delivered-not-received claims, damaged packages, photo-on-delivery compliance, on-time windows.

  • βœ“

State the safety record plainly: preventable accidents, years and route miles, a clean MVR, and the in-cab camera or driving app score if your company used one, such as Netradyne, Lytx, Samsara or Mentor.

  • βœ“

Put a license line where it is easy to find: the state on your driver's license, a DOT medical card with its expiration date if you hold one, and the vehicles you can drive, like cargo van, step van or box truck with a liftgate.

  • βœ“

Show lead work with counts: drivers trained on ride-alongs, rescues taken, mornings covering dispatch. For app-based delivery, use one entry with the platforms, deliveries completed and your rating.

Delivery Driver Resume Questions

Do I need a CDL to be a delivery driver?

For most van routes, no. Under federal rules a CDL is needed for a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, a truck and trailer with a combined rating of 26,001 pounds or more when the trailer is rated over 10,000 pounds, a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more people including the driver, or a load of hazardous materials that requires placards. Cargo vans and most step vans are rated below 26,001 pounds. Some food service and beverage routes run heavier trucks, so those jobs can require a CDL. Check the posting and the truck's rating.

When does a delivery driver need a DOT medical card?

Under FMCSA rules, a vehicle with a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more used in interstate commerce is a commercial motor vehicle, and its driver needs a medical examiner's certificate from an examiner on FMCSA's National Registry, even without a CDL. Many step vans and box trucks are rated above that line, and many cargo vans are below it, so check the label in the driver's door jamb. Interstate commerce can include a trip inside one state when the shipment started or ends outside it. Rules for driving that is purely in-state vary by state. If you hold a card, list it with the expiration date.

Should I put gig delivery work on my resume?

Yes, if it is recent driving experience or it covers a gap. Use one entry, such as 'Independent delivery contractor, DoorDash and Instacart,' with the dates, the number of deliveries the app shows, your rating and the area you covered. A fleet manager reads it as proof you can find addresses and work a route on your own, so leave out platforms you only tried for a week.
