The Five Levels
Years are the typical correlation, not the rule. A ten-year resume of task bullets still reads Mid.
Entry
0–2 yrs
Executes assigned tasks under supervision. “Assisted,” “supported,” “participated in.”
Junior
1–3 yrs
Completes defined work independently. Clear tasks, small scope, no say in what gets worked on.
Mid
3–6 yrs
Owns projects end to end. “Built,” “delivered,” “owned” — with outcomes attributed.
Senior
5–10 yrs
Owns outcomes, not just projects. Decisions, tradeoffs, mentoring, scope that crosses team lines.
Lead / Staff+
8+ yrs
Owns strategy, systems, or people. Sets direction others execute. Budget, headcount, multi-quarter bets.
Why your title doesn't set your level
Every company levels differently — one firm’s Senior is another’s Mid — so screeners discount the word next to your name and re-derive your level from the evidence underneath it. That re-derivation is what this tool runs on your resume before a recruiter does.
The gap that costs interviews

The most common version of the gap: a real Senior title earned through years of solid work, sitting on top of bullets that still describe the job the way a junior would — tasks completed, tools used, responsibilities held. The work was senior. The writing is junior. A screener can only level the writing.
What actually moves the read
Level lives in specific, checkable signals. Downward: assistive verbs (“assisted,” “supported”), duties framed as responsibilities (“responsible for X”), tools listed as achievements, numbers with no baseline. Upward: decisions you made and tradeoffs you weighed, scope that crossed team lines, people you mentored or unblocked, money or risk you were trusted with, outcomes measured against a before.

How does the Level Check decide what level my resume reads as?
The same way screeners at companies with formal leveling do: from the evidence in your bullets, not from your job titles. Ownership language, decisions made, scope crossing team lines, mentoring, and outcomes with baselines read senior. Task language, duties framed as responsibilities, and numbers without context read junior. Why does my resume read below my actual title?
Because titles don't transfer — evidence does. Every company levels differently, so a screener discounts your title and re-levels you from what your bullets demonstrate. 'Responsible for the payments system' claims scope; 'chose to rebuild the payments retry logic, cutting failed charges 40%' demonstrates it. If your bullets describe tasks you were assigned rather than outcomes you owned, you'll read a level below the title on the same page.
What's the difference between this and the resume roast?
The roast grades overall quality — writing, structure, buzzwords, impact.
