Common Mistakes on HVAC Technician Resumes
The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.
- 01
EPA Section 608 missing or vague. Technicians who work on refrigerant circuits in most equipment need it, and the type matters: Type I, II, III or Universal. Put the type on the page.
- 02
Residential and commercial blurred. Split systems and furnaces in homes, rooftop units on a strip mall and chillers in a hospital are different jobs, and a service manager is filling one of them.
- 03
Service, install and maintenance mixed together with no numbers: calls a day, installs a week, maintenance visits, callbacks.
- 04
Licenses and training incomplete. State and city licensing rules vary a lot, and NATE certifications, manufacturer training and A2L refrigerant training all count, so list each with the year.
- 05
Nothing about the customer. Many shops track callbacks, reviews and maintenance agreements sold per tech, and those numbers show you fix it right and leave people happy.
What Trades Reviewers Check First
Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.
EPA Section 608 type, plus any state or local license the work requires. A service manager cannot send you out on refrigerant work without the right certification.
Residential or commercial, service or install. Each runs on different equipment and at a different pace, and the shop is hiring for one of them.
Callbacks and customers. A tech who fixes it the first time and leaves the customer happy is worth more than one who just runs the most calls, so shops that track these read for them.
One HVAC Technician Bullet, Rewritten
The advice above, applied to one typical line.
Before
Performed installation, maintenance, and repair of residential HVAC systems.
After
Residential service tech running about 5 calls a day on split systems, heat pumps and gas furnaces. Kept a 3% callback rate against a 7% shop average in 2025, sold 140 maintenance agreements on service calls, and led 30 heat pump change-outs with a helper.
The first line names the trade. The rewrite gives the work, the equipment, a quality number against the rest of the shop, sales the shop can count and install experience, which is what a service manager checks.

Sample Roast Lines for HVAC Technicians
The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about whatβs actually on your resume.
β'Troubleshot and repaired HVAC systems.' A capacitor, a cracked heat exchanger or a 40-ton rooftop compressor? The service manager would like to know which.β
βYour EPA 608 just says 'certified.' Type I covers window units. Which type do you hold?β
β'Strong work ethic' in July in Phoenix is called running seven calls a day. Write that instead.β
How to Fix Your HVAC Technician Resume

Name the equipment, brands and tools: Carrier, Trane, Lennox or Goodman, variable-speed and inverter systems, combustion analyzers, ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro on the tablet.
- β
Show what you are trusted with: running installs as lead, training apprentices, on-call weekends, commercial rooftop units, controls work.

Roast My HVAC Technician Resume For FreeHVAC Technician Resume Questions
Which EPA 608 certification do I need?
It depends on the equipment. Type I covers small appliances, Type II covers high-pressure systems such as most residential and light commercial air conditioning, Type III covers low-pressure systems such as some chillers, and Universal covers all three. Many service techs aim for Universal. List the type and the year. The certification does not expire.
Do I need NATE certification?
It is not usually required by law, but many employers like to see it and some pay more for it. NATE offers specialty exams in areas like air conditioning, heat pumps and gas heating, for service or installation. List each specialty you hold with the year.
How do I write an HVAC resume as an apprentice?
Lead with your EPA 608, your trade school or apprenticeship program and the hours you have logged. Then add the work you have done under a lead: maintenance visits, installs assisted, the equipment you can diagnose on your own. Add OSHA 10 and any apprentice registration your state requires.
