Truck Driver Resume
Brutally Roasted

You run 2,500 miles a week, back a 53-foot trailer into a dock built for a van, and keep your logs clean. Your resume says 'drove truck.' The DOT asks more questions than that.

Common Mistakes on Truck Driver Resumes

The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.

  • 01

CDL class and endorsements missing or vague. Class A with hazmat, tanker and doubles/triples is a different candidate from Class B with none, and the posting usually says which.

  • 02

No driving record statement. A clean MVR, no preventable accidents and no DOT violations are the first things a safety manager wants, and 'safe driver' does not cover them.

  • 03

No lane or freight type. OTR, regional, local P&D, dedicated, flatbed, reefer, tanker, intermodal, LTL: the day looks different in each and so does the pay.

  • 04

Miles and delivery performance absent. Annual miles, on-time percentage and claims-free loads are how dispatch judges you.

  • 05

Equipment left out. Manual or automatic, dry van or reefer, ELD system, any experience with doubles, oversize or securement on flatbed.

What Trades Reviewers Check First

Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.

  • License, endorsements, medical card and MVR. A safety manager needs those four before anything else, so put them where they can be found in seconds.

  • Verifiable driving experience in recent years, by employer, since gaps in commercial driving history get asked about.

  • Fit to the lane: OTR drivers applying for local P&D, or dry van drivers applying to flatbed, get read for whether they know what they are signing up for.

One Truck Driver Bullet, Rewritten

The advice above, applied to one typical line.

Before

Operated tractor-trailers to deliver freight safely and on time across multiple states.

After

Class A CDL with hazmat and tanker, 7 years verifiable, clean MVR, zero preventable accidents. Ran regional reefer out of Dallas across 9 states, about 115,000 miles a year, 98.6% on-time, no HOS violations, no cargo claims.

The first version is the job title spelled out. The second answers the safety manager's whole checklist, puts a number on the on-time record and tells dispatch what kind of driver they are seating.

Sample Roast Lines for Truck Drivers

The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about what’s actually on your resume.

β€œ'Safe and reliable driver' is in your summary. Your MVR will say whether that is true, so put the numbers on the page before it does.”

β€œYou list 'time management' as a skill. In this job that is called hours of service, and the ELD already graded you.”

β€œ'Delivered freight on time' with no on-time percentage reads like a driver who has never seen a scorecard.”

How to Fix Your Truck Driver Resume

Specific moves that actually move the grade.

  • βœ“

Lead with the license block: CDL class, state, endorsements (H, N, T, X, P), TWIC if you have it, medical card expiration, and years of verifiable driving.

  • βœ“

State the record plainly: 'clean MVR, zero preventable accidents in 6 years, no HOS violations,' plus CSA points if you know them and they are good.

  • βœ“

Give each job its lane and freight: 'regional dry van, 48-foot and 53-foot, 11 western states, home weekly' or 'local LTL P&D, 14 stops a day.'

  • βœ“

Quantify the work: annual miles, on-time delivery rate, loads per week, claims-free deliveries, fuel efficiency if your fleet tracked it.

  • βœ“

Name the equipment and systems: manual 10-speed or automatic, reefer units, liftgates, pallet jacks, flatbed securement and tarping, ELD platform (Samsara, Omnitracs, Motive).

Truck Driver Resume Questions

Should I list accidents or violations on my resume?

Not on the resume, but do not describe your record as clean if it is not, because the MVR and PSP report are pulled before you are hired. Leave the summary neutral and be ready to explain the incident in the interview. Misstating the record is the one thing that ends the process every time.

How do I write a truck driver resume with no experience?

Lead with the CDL, school name, hours of behind-the-wheel training, endorsements and the medical card. Add any related work: forklift, warehouse, delivery driving, military motor transport. Fleets that hire new CDL holders are reading for the license, a clean record and signs you will show up.

Do owner-operator years count the same as company driving?

They count, and they add business skills, but list them clearly: equipment owned, your own authority or the carrier you were leased to, freight type, lanes and miles. Then give the same safety and performance numbers you would as a company driver so a fleet can compare.
