Construction Manager Resume
Brutally Roasted
You run the schedule, the subs, the owner meetings, the safety walk and the punch list, and you hear about the change order before the superintendent calls. Your resume says 'managed construction projects from start to finish.' The owner's rep would ask how big, how late and how far over.

Common Mistakes on Construction Manager Resumes
The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.
- 01
No project size. Contract value, square footage, building type, number of stories and delivery method (design-bid-build, CM at risk, design-build) tell a hiring manager what you can run.
- 02
Schedule and budget results missing. Whether the job finished on time, the final cost against the contract and how change orders were handled are the core of the job.
- 03
Safety reduced to 'ensured compliance.' OSHA 30, the recordable record on your projects and the program you ran on site are specifics a contractor looks for.
- 04
Your role unclear. Project engineer, assistant project manager, project manager, superintendent and construction manager do different work on the same job, so say which you held.
- 05
Credentials and tools unlisted: PMP, CCM, LEED AP, Procore, Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, Bluebeam.
What Trades Reviewers Check First
Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.
Project size and type. Contract value, building type and delivery method tell a hiring manager whether your projects look like theirs.
Results against schedule and budget, and how you handled the changes in between. Every project has problems, and the reader wants to see how yours ended.
Safety record and credentials. OSHA 30 is often expected for site leadership, and the record on your projects is something a contractor will ask about.
One Construction Manager Bullet, Rewritten
The advice above, applied to one typical line.
Before
Managed commercial construction projects from preconstruction through closeout, ensuring quality, safety, and budget compliance.
After
Project manager on a $42M, 5-story, 160,000 sq ft medical office building, CM at risk with a GMP. Reached substantial completion 9 days ahead of the contract date, closed $310,000 under the GMP with change orders at 2.4% of contract value, and ran 22 subcontractors with no OSHA recordables in 310,000 hours worked.
The first line covers every phase and proves none of them. The rewrite gives the project, the delivery method, schedule and cost against the contract, change orders as a share of value and a safety record with the hours behind it, which is how a contractor judges a manager.

Sample Roast Lines for Construction Managers
The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about whatβs actually on your resume.
β'Oversaw all phases of construction' is how every project manager describes a project they were on. Which phase did you actually run?β
β'Delivered projects on time and within budget.' All of them? Name one, with the number.β
βYou list 'stakeholder management' as a skill. On a jobsite that is called the OAC meeting, and the owner wants to know how many change orders came out of it.β
How to Fix Your Construction Manager Resume
Specific moves that actually move the grade.
- β
Open each project with the facts: '$38M, 4-story, 120,000 sq ft medical office building, CM at risk with a GMP.'
- β
Give the results: substantial completion against the contract date, final cost against the GMP or budget, change orders as a share of contract value, punch list closed.
- β
Show safety with numbers you can back up: OSHA 30, hours worked without a recordable on your projects, the site safety program you ran.
- β
Count the coordination: subcontractors managed, RFIs and submittals processed, owner meetings run, inspections passed.
- β
List credentials and tools with years: PMP, CCM from CMCI, LEED AP BD+C, Procore, Primavera P6, Bluebeam Revu, Autodesk Construction Cloud.

Is PMP or CCM better for a construction manager?
They cover different ground. The PMP from PMI is a general project management certification recognized across industries. The CCM from the Construction Management Certification Institute is specific to construction management and requires construction management experience to qualify. Either can help. List what you hold with the year, and if you are working toward one, say when you expect to sit for the exam.
How long should a construction manager resume be?
One page for about the first five years of experience, one or two pages from five to ten, and two after that. A separate project list with value, type, role and dates can carry the full history, and many contractors already keep one for proposals.
How do I move from superintendent to construction manager?
Show the business side of the work you already do: schedules you built, subcontractors you managed, change orders you priced or negotiated, owner meetings you ran, budgets you tracked. Keep the field record too, since knowing how the building goes together is a real advantage in the office.
