DevOps Engineer Resume
Brutally Roasted

You keep the pipelines green and the pager quiet, and when it is not quiet you are the one awake. Your resume says 'managed CI/CD and cloud infrastructure.' That is the job title with extra words.

Common Mistakes on DevOps Engineer Resumes

The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.

  • 01

A tool wall (Kubernetes, Terraform, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Ansible, Docker, Helm, ArgoCD, Prometheus) with no system behind it. Which clusters, how many services, who deployed to them and how often?

  • 02

No reliability numbers. Deploy frequency, lead time, change failure rate, mean time to recovery, uptime against an SLO. These are the metrics of the job and they are missing.

  • 03

Cloud listed as 'AWS' with no services, no account structure, no spend. Running three EC2 instances and running a multi-account landing zone with $400k a month in spend are different careers.

  • 04

No incident or on-call story. If you carried the pager, you have postmortems, and they are better evidence than another pipeline bullet.

  • 05

Migrations described as finished with no mention of what broke, what was cut over and how downtime was avoided.

What Engineering Reviewers Check First

Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.

  • Whether you have run production or only built around it. On-call, incidents and SLOs are the tell.

  • Depth in one cloud and one orchestration layer over breadth across all of them. Teams standardize, and the ramp-time question is specific.

  • Infrastructure as code that others could use. A module library with reviews and versioning is a different signal from a folder of scripts that only you can run.

One DevOps Engineer Bullet, Rewritten

The advice above, applied to one typical line.

Before

Managed CI/CD pipelines and cloud infrastructure using Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS.

After

Owned the platform for 70 microservices on EKS across three environments, serving 45 engineers. Moved deploys from a weekly release train to 20+ a day with GitHub Actions and ArgoCD, held change failure rate under 5%, and cut the AWS bill 28% through rightsizing and savings plans.

The first line names the tools and nothing else. The second gives scale, the delivery change with before-and-after numbers, a reliability guardrail and a cost result, all of which a platform lead can check in the first interview.

Sample Roast Lines for DevOps Engineers

The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about what’s actually on your resume.

β€œ'Automated deployments' is on every DevOps resume written since 2012. Automated them from what, to what, and did anyone stop SSHing into prod?”

β€œYour resume lists Kubernetes, EKS, GKE, AKS and OpenShift. Either you have had five jobs in two years or the list is aspirational.”

β€œ'Improved system reliability' with no SLO, no uptime number and no incident count. The dashboard you built would not accept this as a metric.”

How to Fix Your DevOps Engineer Resume

Specific moves that actually move the grade.

  • βœ“

Open each role with the platform size: services, clusters, environments, engineers served, cloud spend, and whether you owned it or contributed.

  • βœ“

Use delivery and reliability numbers: deploys per day from X to Y, lead time, change failure rate, MTTR, SLO attainment, incident count by quarter.

  • βœ“

Name the infrastructure as code and what it covered: 'Terraform modules for 40 AWS accounts under Control Tower, reviewed through Atlantis.'

  • βœ“

Give one migration or platform build the full treatment: starting state, the plan, the cutover, the downtime (or none), and what it did to cost or speed.

  • βœ“

Show cost work: reserved instances and savings plans, rightsizing, spot usage, a bill you cut by a stated percentage, since it is often the clearest number you have.

DevOps Engineer Resume Questions

Should I call myself DevOps, SRE or platform engineer?

Match the posting, and let the bullets do the work. SRE postings lean on SLOs, incident response and reliability engineering. Platform roles lean on internal tooling and developer experience. DevOps is the broad label. The title on your resume matters less than whether the evidence underneath it fits the job.

Do I need certifications like AWS Solutions Architect or CKA?

They help at the screening stage and are worth listing with the year, but they rarely carry a resume on their own. A CKA next to a bullet about running production clusters is strong. A CKA next to nothing is a study plan.

How do I show DevOps work from a developer role?

Pull it out explicitly: the pipeline you built, the Dockerfiles and Helm charts you wrote, the monitoring you set up, the on-call rotation you joined. Lots of DevOps engineers started that way, and the resume should make the shift visible rather than hoping the reader infers it.
