Civil Engineer Resume
Brutally Roasted

You design the road, size the pipe, run the storm model and get the plans through review. Your resume says 'designed civil infrastructure projects.' The plan reviewer would mark that sheet incomplete.

Common Mistakes on Civil Engineer Resumes

The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.

  • 01

Licensure unclear. EIT or EI, PE with the state, or 'PE exam scheduled' are different stages, and only a licensed PE can seal drawings, which decides who can be engineer of record.

  • 02

Discipline buried. Transportation, water resources, site development, structural, geotechnical and construction management hire for different skills, and 'civil engineer' alone does not say which.

  • 03

Projects with no size: construction cost, lane miles, acres, pipe length, number of lots, design storm. Without them a reader cannot place your level.

  • 04

Software listed with no task: Civil 3D, OpenRoads, HEC-RAS, StormCAD, SWMM. Say what you designed or modeled with each.

  • 05

Your role on the project left vague. Designer, project engineer, engineer of record and construction observer are different jobs on the same project.

What Engineering Reviewers Check First

Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.

  • Licensure stage: EIT or EI, PE, and in which states. It decides whether you can seal plans and what role a firm can give you on a project.

  • Discipline and project type. A water resources group wants hydraulic modeling, a land development group wants grading, utilities and permitting, and a DOT consultant wants roadway design to the state manual.

  • The full cycle: design, permitting and some construction phase work like submittals, RFIs and site visits. It shows you know what happens to the drawings after they leave the office.

One Civil Engineer Bullet, Rewritten

The advice above, applied to one typical line.

Before

Designed civil infrastructure projects including roadways and stormwater systems using AutoCAD Civil 3D.

After

Project engineer (PE, Tennessee) for site and roadway design on 14 projects up to $22M. Designed grading, drainage and utilities in Civil 3D for a 46-acre mixed-use site, sized detention for the 2- through 100-year storms in HEC-HMS, got the stormwater permit on the first submittal, and answered 38 RFIs during construction.

The first line names the software and a category. The rewrite gives the license, the role, the size of the work, the model and design storms, a permitting result and construction phase work, which is how a reviewer places your level.

Sample Roast Lines for Civil Engineers

The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about what’s actually on your resume.

β€œ'Worked on various transportation projects' is how a plan sheet would read if it had no title block.”

β€œYou list AutoCAD as a skill. The firm assumed. What did you draw, and did it get built?”

β€œ'Ensured compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.' Which ones? The DOT design manual, the county stormwater ordinance, ADA, all three?”

How to Fix Your Civil Engineer Resume

Specific moves that actually move the grade.

  • βœ“

Put licensure in the header line: 'PE (Tennessee), 2022' or 'EIT, PE exam scheduled spring 2027.'

  • βœ“

Give each project a size and your role: '$14M, 2.3-mile arterial widening, project engineer for roadway and drainage design.'

  • βœ“

Name the standards and models: the state DOT design manual, the AASHTO Green Book, the local stormwater manual, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, and the design storms you checked.

  • βœ“

Count the deliverables: plan sets and sheets, permits obtained, review comments resolved, RFIs answered and submittals reviewed during construction.

  • βœ“

Show cost or schedule results: a value engineering change that saved money, a permit approved on the first submittal, a bid that came in under the estimate.

Civil Engineer Resume Questions

Should I put PE or EIT after my name on my resume?

Yes. Put it after your name in the header and again in the credentials section with the state and year. If you hold licenses in several states, list each one. Earning the PE generally means an accredited engineering degree, passing the FE exam, several years of supervised experience and passing the PE exam, with details set by each state board, so if the PE exam is scheduled, say so with the date.

Can a civil engineer resume be two pages?

Yes, once the experience supports it. One page fits about the first five years, one or two pages fits five to ten, and two pages is normal past ten. A separate project list, which consulting firms often keep for proposals anyway, can carry the full project history while the resume stays focused on roles and results.

How do I switch disciplines within civil engineering?

Lead with the shared work: plan production in Civil 3D or OpenRoads, permitting, coordination with reviewers, construction phase services. Then show any exposure to the new area, even a single project. A short summary line that names the move directly saves the reader from guessing.
