Should I include a portfolio as a mechanical engineer?
If you have manufactured parts you can show, yes. Drawings, renders, and a short note on the constraint each design solved. It's most useful early on, when your experience section is still thin. Check what your NDA allows first.
How specific should I get about materials and tolerances?
Specific enough that another engineer can picture the part. The hiring manager is often an engineer, and vague bullets lose exactly the reader best placed to recognize good work.
Does the FE or PE license matter?
It depends on the sector. In HVAC and building systems, energy, and anything with public safety sign-off, it can matter a lot. In consumer products and most manufacturing, it's rarely asked for. Check the postings you're targeting rather than assuming.
