You walk the perimeter at 2am, check badges at the dock gate, catch the propped door on camera and write the incident report the property manager reads in the morning. Your resume says 'provided security services.' So does the sign on the fence.

Common Mistakes on Security Guard Resumes

The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.

  • 01

No site or post. An office lobby, a hospital emergency department, a retail entrance, a distribution center gate, a concert and an apartment complex are different jobs, and so are armed and unarmed, fixed post and mobile patrol. The posting names one of them.

  • 02

License details missing. Guard card or registration, the state that issued it, the expiration date and any firearm or baton permit are often checked first, because requirements vary by state and an officer without the right one cannot be posted.

  • 03

Duties with no numbers. Patrol rounds a shift, cameras monitored, badges issued, trucks checked in, alarms answered and incident reports written show the size of the post and how much of it was yours.

  • 04

Systems unnamed. Camera platforms like Genetec Security Center or Milestone XProtect, access control like LenelS2 OnGuard, and guard tour and reporting apps like TrackTik or Silvertrac tell a manager how fast you will learn their site.

  • 05

Judgment left out. Most of the job is noticing, talking people down, calling the right people and writing it up clearly. De-escalation training, CPR and first aid, and one incident you handled well say more than 'able to lift 50 pounds.'

What Security Reviewers Check First

Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.

  • A license you can be posted with today. Requirements vary by state, so a guard card or registration in their state, its expiration date and any firearm or baton permit are often checked before the bullets.

  • Reliability. The shifts you can work, overnights and weekends, and how long you stayed at each post tell an account manager whether you will be there at 11pm on a Saturday.

  • Judgment and writing. Calm de-escalation, knowing when to call police or EMS, and incident reports a client can use matter on almost every post. One specific incident handled well says more than a list of duties.

One Security Guard Bullet, Rewritten

The advice above, applied to one typical line.

Before

Provided security for the facility, conducted patrols, monitored cameras, and wrote incident reports.

After

Unarmed security officer on nights at a 400-bed hospital, posted to the emergency department and parking structures. Ran 6 patrol rounds a shift with 98% tour scan compliance in TrackTik, answered about 15 calls for service a night, and wrote 120 incident reports in 2025, none returned for corrections.

The first line lists what every guard does. The rewrite gives the site, the post, the shift, patrol volume with a number from the guard tour system, call volume and report quality, which is what a security manager checks.

Sample Roast Lines for Security Guards

The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about what’s actually on your resume.

β€œ'Ensured the safety and security of the premises.' That is the job title written as a sentence. How many doors, how many cameras, how many rounds a night?”

β€œ'Observe and report' is your whole summary. The camera does the observing. What did you report, and what happened next?”

β€œYou list 'strong attention to detail.' Your guard card expiration date is missing.”

How to Fix Your Security Guard Resume

Specific moves that actually move the grade.

  • βœ“

Put the license block near the top: guard card or registration with the state and expiration, any firearm, baton or pepper spray permits, CPR, first aid and AED, and de-escalation training like CPI, each with the year.

  • βœ“

Open each job with the site and the post: 'unarmed site supervisor, 1.1 million sq ft distribution center, 3 gates, 140 cameras, 9 officers across 3 shifts.'

  • βœ“

Count the work: patrol rounds a shift and tour compliance, visitors and badges processed, trucks checked in, alarms answered, calls for service, incident reports written.

  • βœ“

Name the system with the task: 'monitored 140 cameras in Genetec Security Center,' 'issued and deactivated badges in LenelS2 OnGuard,' 'logged patrol scans and reports in TrackTik.'

  • βœ“

Include one incident told plainly: what you saw, how you responded or calmed it down, who you called, and what changed afterward, like a new post order or a door that finally got fixed.

Security Guard Resume Questions

Do I need a license to work as a security guard?

In most places, yes, but the rules vary by state, and a few states, like Colorado, have no statewide license and leave it to cities such as Denver. In California you need a Security Guard Registration (the guard card) from BSIS: Power to Arrest training before it is issued, 32 hours of skills training in the first six months and 8 hours of continuing training each year. New York requires an 8-hour pre-assignment course for the registration card, a 16-hour on-the-job course within 90 days of being hired and an 8-hour in-service course each year after that. Texas requires the DPS Level II course for security officers and the Level III course, at least 45 hours, for commissioned (armed) officers. Put the license, the state and the expiration date on your resume.

How do I write a security guard resume with no experience?

Start with the license. In states like California and New York the first course comes before you apply for it, so finishing it early makes you easier to hire. Then use jobs that show you are reliable and calm with the public: retail, customer service, event staff, lifeguarding, the military. Add CPR, first aid and AED certification, list the shifts you can work, and mention a clean driving record if the job includes vehicle patrol.

How do I move from security officer to shift lead or site supervisor?

Show the supervisor work you already do: covering open shifts, training new officers on post orders, reviewing reports before they go to the client, running the shift when the supervisor is out. Give numbers where you can, like officers trained or tour compliance on your shift. A certification can help too, such as IFPO's Certified Protection Officer, the IAHSS certifications for hospital security, or the ASIS International APP, an entry-level credential for people with at least a year of paid security experience.
