Brutally Roasted
You draft the motions, run the discovery, cite-check the brief and calendar the deadline the attorney forgot. Your resume says 'provided legal support.' The partner would send that back with a sticky note.

Common Mistakes on Paralegal Resumes
The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.
- 01
Practice area missing. Litigation, corporate, real estate, family, immigration, IP and estate planning use different documents and different software, and the firm is hiring for one.
- 02
'Drafted legal documents' with no document named. Complaints, discovery responses, deposition summaries, closing binders and privilege logs are specific and tell the reader your level.
- 03
No sense of volume or stakes: caseload, deal count, document review size, trial support.
- 04
Software unnamed. Relativity, Clio, iManage, NetDocuments, Westlaw, Lexis, CompuLaw or another docketing system. Firms sort on these.
- 05
Certification and billing unclear. NALA CP, NFPA CRP, state certifications, and whether you billed hours and to what target.
What Legal Reviewers Check First
Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.
Practice area and court experience that matches the opening. A family law paralegal and an M&A paralegal are not interchangeable to the hiring attorney.
Whether you can run a matter day to day: deadlines calendared, filings made, discovery tracked, without being told twice.
Writing. The resume is read as a drafting sample, and typos or inconsistent formatting on it count against you more than in most jobs.
One Paralegal Bullet, Rewritten
The advice above, applied to one typical line.
Before
Assisted attorneys with legal research, document preparation, and case management.
After
Litigation paralegal supporting three partners on commercial disputes. Managed discovery on a 220,000-document matter in Relativity, drafted first-pass responses to 14 sets of interrogatories in one year, maintained the docket in CompuLaw with no missed deadlines, and billed 1,450 hours against a 1,400 target.
Research and document preparation describe every paralegal in the building. The rewrite names the practice area, the scale of the matter, the documents, the docketing record and the billing, which is what a hiring partner is trying to work out.

Sample Roast Lines for Paralegals
The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about whatβs actually on your resume.
β'Assisted attorneys with legal matters' is the whole profession in five words. Which matters, and what did you file?β
β'Proofread documents for accuracy' sits two lines above a typo in 'litigation.' The brief would have been returned.β
β'Conducted legal research' with no database, no practice area and no brief it went into. Westlaw did more work than this bullet.β
How to Fix Your Paralegal Resume
Specific moves that actually move the grade.
- β
Open with practice area, firm type and size, and the attorneys you supported: 'litigation paralegal, 40-attorney regional firm, supporting three partners in commercial disputes.'
- β
Name the documents and the volume: discovery responses per month, depositions summarized, motions drafted, closing binders assembled, document sets reviewed with page counts.
- β
Say if you billed and how much: annual billable hours and the target, plus whether your time was written off.
- β
List the tools with what you did in them: Relativity review and coding, iManage document management, CompuLaw or Clio docketing, Westlaw and Lexis research, e-filing in state and federal courts.
- β
Put certifications in the header: NALA Certified Paralegal, NFPA CRP, a state-specific certification, or an ABA-approved paralegal certificate, with the year.

Roast My Paralegal Resume For FreeParalegal Resume Questions
Should I list my billable hours on a paralegal resume?
If you billed, yes, with the target. It tells a firm you are used to tracking time and that your work was billable to clients rather than written off. In-house and government roles do not bill, so leave it out there.
Do I need a paralegal certificate or certification?
They are different things. A certificate is an educational program, often ABA-approved. A certification is an exam credential like the NALA CP or NFPA CRP. Some firms want one, some want neither, and experience in the practice area usually carries more weight. List what you have accurately and never call a certificate a certification.
How do I move from one practice area to another?
Lead with the transferable mechanics: docketing, e-filing, document management, research, client contact. Then show any exposure to the new area, even a few matters. Be direct about the switch in a short summary line rather than letting the reader figure it out.
