Career Change Resume Example: Teacher to Instructional Designer
A middle school science teacher in Denver, seven years in, moving into instructional design and corporate training. The headline and summary name the new job, one freelance project shows the new work, and the teaching bullets are rewritten in the language of the new field.
A fictional resume written by our team. The person, employers and numbers are invented; the tools, certifications and schools are real.
Why it works
- 1
“Instructional designer with seven years of designing and teaching science courses for 150 students a year. Builds e-learning in Articulate Storyline and Rise, writes to measurable objectives and checks results with pre- and post-assessments. Completed the ATD Instructional Design Certificate in 2026; portfolio of 4 sample modules linked above.”
The first words are the new job title, not 'teacher seeking a change'. The summary does the translating up front, so a corporate recruiter reads the rest of the page as instructional design work that happened to take place in a school.
- 2
“Built a 25-minute onboarding module in Articulate Rise for a 40-person property management company; new hires' 30-day quiz scores rose from 71% to 88%”
One real project in the new field outweighs any list of transferable skills. It has a client, a tool, a length and a measured result, and it sits above the teaching job because it is the closest match.
- 3
“Turned a 60-slide compliance deck into a branching Storyline scenario with knowledge checks, published to the client's LMS as a SCORM package”
SCORM, LMS and knowledge checks are the words that show up in instructional design postings. They are here because the work used them, which is the honest way for keywords to reach a page.
- 4
“Designed a 36-week science curriculum for 150 students a year, with a measurable objective and an assessment for every unit”
'Taught science' becomes curriculum design with objectives, which is the core of the new job. Nothing is invented; the same work is described in the terms a training manager uses.
- 5
“Trained 22 teachers on Canvas and Google Classroom in after-school workshops during the district's 2021 move to a new LMS”
Teaching adults is the bridge into corporate training, so it gets its own bullet with a head count. It is the line on the page closest to the job being applied for.
How it scored
We ran this example through the same free roast you can use, three times, and kept the middle result. The roast ranks a resume against a typical applicant pile and grades hard, so a resume with little work history can be a good example of its kind and still not score high.

Use it as a skeleton, then replace every line with your own work. A copied bullet with someone else's numbers is the fastest way to fail an interview question.
