Medical Assistant Resume
Brutally Roasted

You room 30 patients a day, draw blood, give injections and keep the provider on schedule. Your resume says 'assisted physicians with patient care.' That describes everyone in the building who is not the physician.

Common Mistakes on Medical Assistant Resumes

The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.

  • 01

No specialty or setting. Family practice, pediatrics, dermatology, ortho and urgent care each want different hands-on skills, and 'clinic' hides which ones you have.

  • 02

Clinical skills listed as a wall: vitals, injections, EKGs, phlebotomy, with no sense of how often you do each. Daily and once-in-training read the same on the page.

  • 03

Certification missing or unclear. CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA) and NCMA (NCCT) are different credentials, and the posting usually names one.

  • 04

No EHR named, or Epic listed with nothing about what you did in it: rooming workflow, order entry, prior authorizations, patient messages.

  • 05

Front-desk and back-office work blended together so the reader cannot tell whether you were clinical, administrative or both.

What Healthcare Reviewers Check First

Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.

  • Certification, with the issuing body and whether it is current, plus a BLS card. Practice managers tend to look for these before reading anything else.

  • Whether your clinical skills match the specialty: pediatric immunization schedules, ortho casting and splinting, derm biopsy setup, pap assistance in ob/gyn. The specialty decides which skills matter.

  • EHR and patient volume, which together say how fast you can be left alone with a schedule.

One Medical Assistant Bullet, Rewritten

The advice above, applied to one typical line.

Before

Assisted physicians with patient care, took vitals, and maintained patient records.

After

Roomed about 28 patients a day for two family medicine physicians in Epic, gave roughly 60 injections a week including the full pediatric schedule, and worked the overdue-screening recall list down from 400 patients to under 90 in six months.

Vitals and records are the baseline for the title. Volume, provider count, the injection load and a recall project with a number show what you actually carry in a clinic day.

Sample Roast Lines for Medical Assistants

The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about what’s actually on your resume.

β€œ'Took vitals' is on every medical assistant resume ever written. What was the other seven hours of the shift?”

β€œYour certification is listed as 'certified medical assistant' with no issuing body and no date. Four organizations issue one. Pick yours.”

β€œ'Fast-paced clinic' and 'multitasking' are taking up the space where 'roomed 28 patients a day for two providers' should be.”

How to Fix Your Medical Assistant Resume

Specific moves that actually move the grade.

  • βœ“

Open with the setting, patients per day and providers supported: 'dermatology practice, two MDs and a PA, about 45 patients a day.'

  • βœ“

Put the certification in the header line with the issuing body and expiration: 'CMA (AAMA), exp. 2027', plus BLS.

  • βœ“

Give frequency to clinical skills: injections per week, blood draws per day, EKGs, ear lavage, suture removal, point-of-care tests (strep, flu, A1c, urinalysis).

  • βœ“

Name the EHR and the workflows: rooming and chief complaint capture in Epic, order entry, immunization registry updates, prior authorizations, refill protocols.

  • βœ“

Show one thing you fixed: a vaccine fridge log that passed inspection, a recall list you worked down, a rooming change that got the provider back on schedule.

Medical Assistant Resume Questions

Which medical assistant certification should I put on my resume?

Whichever you hold, named exactly: CMA from the AAMA, RMA from AMT, CCMA from the NHA, or NCMA from NCCT, with the expiration. If you are not certified yet, say 'eligible to sit for the CMA (AAMA) exam' and the date, which is better than leaving the line blank.

Should I separate clinical and administrative duties?

Yes, if you did both. Two short groups under the same job make it clear whether you can room, inject and draw, or whether you mostly handled check-in and scheduling. Blending them makes a clinic manager guess, and they tend to guess conservatively.

How do I write a medical assistant resume with only externship experience?

Treat the externship as the first job: setting, hours completed, procedures performed with counts, EHR used, and the preceptor's specialty. Put certification and BLS in the header, and list the clinical competencies you were checked off on. It is a thinner resume, but it is a real one.
