Common Mistakes on Certified Nursing Assistant Resumes
The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.
- 01
Certification without the state. CNAs are certified by the state and listed on that state's nurse aide registry, so the state and your current status are the first things checked. Some states use a different title, like STNA in Ohio or LNA in New Hampshire, so use the one your registry uses.
- 02
No setting or load. Long-term care, a hospital floor, rehab, assisted living, home health and hospice are different days, and residents per shift tells the reader your pace.
- 03
Skills listed as 'patient care' when the specifics are what matter: Hoyer and sit-to-stand lifts, two-person transfers, feeding assistance, catheter care, intake and output, vitals.
- 04
Shift and reliability missing. Which shifts you work, whether you pick up extras, and your attendance are things a scheduler cares about.
- 05
Charting system unnamed. PointClickCare, MatrixCare, Epic and paper flowsheets are all in use, and naming yours shortens training.
What Healthcare Reviewers Check First
Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.
Certification on the state nurse aide registry, plus CPR or BLS. Nursing homes check the registry before hiring an aide, so put your status where it is easy to find.
Setting and shift. A hospital, a long-term care facility and home health need different things, and the scheduler is filling a specific shift.
Dependability and safe handling. Attendance, safe transfers and how you treat residents are what a director of nursing is trying to judge from a short resume.
One Certified Nursing Assistant Bullet, Rewritten
The advice above, applied to one typical line.
Before
Assisted residents with activities of daily living, took vital signs, and maintained a safe environment.
After
CNA on day shift in a 110-bed skilled nursing facility, caring for 10 to 12 residents a shift across long-term care and short-term rehab. Handled Hoyer and sit-to-stand transfers with no resident falls in 2 years, charted vitals and intake and output in PointClickCare every shift, and picked up 40 extra shifts in 2025 with no call-offs.
The first line is the CNA job description. The rewrite gives the setting, the shift, the resident load, a safety record, the charting system and an attendance record, which covers what a director of nursing is checking.

Sample Roast Lines for Certified Nursing Assistants
The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about whatβs actually on your resume.
β'Compassionate caregiver' is in the summary and there is not a single number on the page. How many residents, on which shift?β
β'Assisted with activities of daily living' is the definition of the job. The charge nurse wrote it on the posting.β
βYou list 'teamwork' as a skill. On a short-staffed night, teamwork is called 'covered half of another hall,' and that is the bullet you should have written.β
How to Fix Your Certified Nursing Assistant Resume
Specific moves that actually move the grade.
- β
Put the certification in the header: 'Certified Nursing Assistant, Indiana Nurse Aide Registry, active,' plus CPR/BLS.
- β
Open each job with the setting and the load: '120-bed skilled nursing facility, 10 to 12 residents on day shift, long-term care and short-term rehab.'
- β
Name the hands-on skills you use every shift: Hoyer or sit-to-stand transfers, repositioning schedules, feeding assistance, vitals, intake and output, weights, specimen collection.
- β
Give reliability and safety numbers you can stand behind: no call-offs in a year, extra shifts picked up, no falls during your transfers, a turning schedule you kept.
- β
If you trained new aides or are in nursing school, say so. It shows where you are headed and that the facility trusted you with others.

Roast My Certified Nursing Assistant Resume For FreeCertified Nursing Assistant Resume Questions
How do I list my CNA certification on a resume?
Write the title your state uses, the state and your registry status, for example 'Certified Nursing Assistant, Indiana Nurse Aide Registry, active.' Add the training program and year under education. Certification means completing a state-approved training program and passing the state competency exam, after which you are listed on the registry. Keep it current, since it can lapse if you go too long without paid nursing work, and the renewal rules vary by state.
How do I write a CNA resume with no experience?
Lead with the certification and your clinical hours from training: the facility, the hours and the skills you were checked off on. Add any caregiving, even for a family member, and jobs that show reliability, like food service or retail with a good attendance record. Facilities hiring new aides are often reading for the certification and signs you will show up.
Should I mention that I am in nursing school?
Yes. Put it under education with the program and expected graduation date. It shows where you are headed, and it can open a conversation about tuition help or a nurse-track role where a facility offers them. Mention your availability too, since classes affect which shifts you can take.
