Bartender Resume
Brutally Roasted

You set up the well, batch the syrups, work three tickets off the service printer while talking to the regular at seat four, and card the guy who swears he's 30. Your resume says 'mixed and served drinks to customers.' The soda gun does that.

Common Mistakes on Bartender Resumes

The patterns that keep turning up, and why they cost you the call.

  • 01

No bar type or pace. A high-volume sports bar, a cocktail bar, a hotel lobby bar, a restaurant service bar and a banquet bar are different jobs, and the bar manager is hiring for one.

  • 02

Volume missing. Drinks an hour at the peak, seats at the bar and how many bartenders worked the shift tell a manager whether you can hold a Saturday night.

  • 03

Cost left out. Pour cost, inventory counts, waste and comps are numbers a bar manager watches every week, and a bartender who helps keep them in line stands out from one who only knows the recipes.

  • 04

Alcohol service training unnamed. TIPS, ServSafe Alcohol and state programs like California's RBS certification or a Texas TABC seller-server certificate are often the first thing a manager checks, and which ones you need depends on the state.

  • 05

Craft not shown. The classic specs you know, a menu you helped write, batching and prep, and spirits or beer training like WSET or Cicerone tell a cocktail bar how much training you will need.

What Hospitality Reviewers Check First

Generic resume advice averages every field together. This is what someone hiring for this one actually looks for.

  • A bar like theirs. A cocktail bar reads for specs, menu work and pace on a busy bar top, and a high-volume or banquet bar reads for speed, accuracy and keeping the well stocked.

  • The alcohol service training their state or employer requires, and whether it is current. Some states require certification within a set time after hire, and many employers ask for it even where the state does not.

  • Trust with money and product. A drawer that balances, inventory and pour cost, and careful ID checks tell a manager you can be left alone behind the bar.

One Bartender Bullet, Rewritten

The advice above, applied to one typical line.

Before

Mixed and served drinks, provided excellent customer service, and maintained a clean bar.

After

Lead bartender at a 70-seat cocktail bar, about 260 cocktails on a Saturday with 2 other bartenders. Write 3 seasonal menus a year with the bar manager, brought pour cost from 23% to 19% in 2025 with weekly counts and jiggered pours, and trained 7 new bartenders and barbacks.

The first line describes every bartender. The rewrite gives the bar, the volume, the team, menu work, a cost number with a before and after and training others, which covers what a bar manager is hiring for.

Sample Roast Lines for Bartenders

The kind of lines the roast writes for this role. Yours will be about what’s actually on your resume.

β€œ'Mixologist with a passion for craft cocktails.' Name one drink you put on a menu and how many of it you sold.”

β€œ'Thrived in a fast-paced environment.' It's a bar on a Friday. How many drinks an hour, and how many of you were behind it?”

β€œYou list 'cash handling' as a skill. Did the drawer balance, or are we not talking about that?”

How to Fix Your Bartender Resume

Specific moves that actually move the grade.

  • βœ“

Open each job with the bar and the pace: '70-seat cocktail bar, 14 seats at the bar, about 260 cocktails on a Saturday with 3 bartenders.'

  • βœ“

Give the numbers the bar tracked: pour cost, sales per shift from the POS, inventory variance, and ticket times on the service bar.

  • βœ“

Name the craft: the classic specs you know cold, menus you helped write and cost, batching and house syrups, and any spirits, beer or wine training like WSET or Cicerone, with the year.

  • βœ“

List alcohol and food safety training with the year and the state: TIPS, ServSafe Alcohol, your state's program such as California RBS or Texas TABC seller-server, and a food handler card.

  • βœ“

Show trust and growth: opening and closing, counting the drawer, running inventory and the liquor order, training barbacks and new bartenders, and lead shifts.

Bartender Resume Questions

Do I need a certification to work as a bartender?

It depends on where you work, because alcohol server training rules are set by each state and sometimes by a city or county. California requires on-premises alcohol servers and their managers to be certified in Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) through the state ABC within 60 days of starting work. Texas does not require TABC seller-server certification under state law, but many employers do. TIPS and ServSafe Alcohol are offered across the country, though not every state accepts them for its own requirement. Check your state's alcohol agency and list what you hold with the year.

How do I move from barback or server to bartender?

Show the bar work you already do: stocking the well, changing kegs, prep and syrups, running the service bar on busy nights, or covering when a bartender calls out. Say how many bar shifts you have picked up. Get your alcohol service certification before you apply, and learn the classic specs the bar uses, since many managers will ask you to make a few drinks before they hire you.

Should I list cocktails I created on my resume?

Yes, if they made a menu. Name one or two drinks, the bar they ran at and a result, like how many sold or whether they stayed on for another season. Keep it to a line or two, and only list drinks you can make well on the spot, because a cocktail bar may ask you to.
