Is My Resume Good? Here's How to Tell (And What to Fix)
Not sure if your resume is good or bad? Here are the signs that your resume is working, the red flags that it's not, and how to get an honest answer in seconds.
The short answer: your resume is good if it gets callbacks for jobs you're qualified for, if a stranger can tell your role and level in a few seconds, if most bullets show a result rather than a task, and if it's tailored to each posting. It's not good if applications go unanswered, every bullet starts with "Responsible for," it opens with an objective statement, or it lists skills everyone has. The checklist at the bottom scores it in five minutes, and the free roast gives you a letter grade in 30 seconds.
You've stared at your resume for so long that the words don't mean anything anymore. You've tweaked the margins, swapped a few bullet points around, maybe changed the font twice. And now you're Googling "is my resume good?" because you genuinely have no idea.
You're not alone. Plenty of people have no idea whether their resume is helping or hurting them, and there's a reason for that. Nobody teaches you how to write one, and the advice online is all over the place. One site says keep it to one page, another says two pages is fine, and your uncle says to print it on fancy paper.
Here's the truth: there are clear, measurable signs that separate a good resume from a bad one. Let's go through them.
Signs Your Resume Is Actually Good
Before you spiral, check whether your resume already hits these marks:
- You're getting callbacks. This is the metric that matters most. If you're applying to jobs you're genuinely qualified for and a steady trickle of them call you back, your resume is doing its job.
- It passes the 6-second test. A recruiter's first pass is short (Ladders' eye-tracking study measured six seconds in 2012 and 7.4 in its 2018 update). If someone can glance at yours and immediately understand your role, experience level, and value, that's a win. The 6-Second Replay runs that first pass on your own resume and shows what registers and what never gets reached.
- Your bullet points show results, not tasks. "Managed social media accounts" is a task. "Grew Instagram engagement by 47% in 3 months" is a result. Good resumes are packed with the second kind.
- It's tailored to the job. A resume that works for every job works for no job. If you're adjusting keywords and emphasis for each application, you're ahead of a lot of candidates. Job Match tells you which of a posting's keywords your resume is still missing.
- The formatting is clean and scannable. No walls of text, no weird fonts, consistent spacing. A recruiter's eyes should flow naturally from top to bottom.
๐ก Tip
If you're hitting 3 or more of these, your resume is probably in decent shape. But "decent" and "great" are two different things, and the gap between them is where interviews live.

Signs Your Resume Is Bad (Be Honest)
Now for the uncomfortable part. These are the red flags that your resume might be holding you back:
You're applying everywhere and hearing nothing
If you've sent out dozens of applications for jobs you fit and heard nothing, it's probably not just bad luck. Something on your resume may be turning recruiters off, or an applicant tracking system may not be reading it properly.
Your bullet points all start with "Responsible for"
This is one of the most common resume mistakes there is. "Responsible for managing a team of 5" tells a recruiter nothing about how well you did it. Every bullet point should answer the question: "So what?"
You have an objective statement at the top
Objective statements went out of style years ago. "Seeking a challenging position where I can utilize my skills" takes up prime real estate and says absolutely nothing. Replace it with a 2-3 line professional summary that highlights your biggest wins.
It's more than two pages (and you're not a senior executive)
If you graduated college in the last 10 years and your resume is three pages, you're including too much. Hiring managers don't want your complete autobiography. They want the highlight reel.
You list skills that everyone has
Microsoft Word, email, "communication skills": these aren't differentiators. If every other applicant can claim the same thing, it's taking up space that could go to something that actually sets you apart.
๐ฅ Did you know?
Here's a brutal test: read your resume and ask yourself, "Could literally anyone in my field have written this?" If the answer is yes, your resume is too generic.
The Problem With Asking Friends and Family
Your mom thinks your resume is great. Your friend says "looks good to me." Your college career center gave you a template in 2019 and called it a day.
The issue with asking people you know is that they're either not qualified to judge a resume, or they don't want to hurt your feelings. You end up with vague reassurance instead of honest, actionable feedback.
What you actually need is someone (or something) that will tell you the truth without sugarcoating it.
How to Get an Honest Resume Review
You have a few options:
- Hire a professional resume writer. This works, but it usually costs a few hundred dollars and takes days or weeks.
- Post it on Reddit. r/resumes can be helpful, but feedback quality is hit or miss and you're sharing personal details publicly.
- Use an AI resume reviewer. Fast, private, and often genuinely useful. The best ones go beyond grammar and actually analyze your content, structure, and impact. If that reviewer is ChatGPT, use seven prompts that make ChatGPT critique a resume honestly so you get a diagnosis instead of praise.
Or you could just get your resume roasted.
